1952 Guild on Avenham Park in an event entitled Poise and Purpose (although the first day's performance was unpoised!)
The display took place on 2 days. The equipment was a box, spring board and mat. We had spent months practising the routine, which involved running up to the box, hitting the springboard fairly hard and (on descent) gripping the leading corners of the box, doing a forward roll along the box and a hand stand off it. Easy eh? Being the Grammar School, our own gym equipment, although old and well-used, was big and strong and we were pretty good at it. For the display (and bearing in mind that there were umpteen displays occurring simultaneously by different schools) the Council provided brand new bits and pieces, which were smaller than our school items, but didn't tell us. I (Dave Swindlehurst) was first to go, running and hitting the board as practised. Result? I missed the box completely and landed in an inelegant heap on the mat, fortunately without doing significant damage to myself. The rest of the team having witnessed this gymnastic tour-de-force, they were able to adjust and perform reasonably well (so I have been told - I was in no position to judge). As I remember, the second day was more professional.

Peter Grandidge, Franklyn Jackson and Peter Swann on the long walk home from the Walton-le-Dale playing fields in 1955 (no car owning parents to chauffeur kids around in those days).
Peter Grandidge used to live near the old Empress Cinema in Eldon Street and Peter Swann’s parents ran a confectioners on the corner of PlungingtonRoad and Ripon Street.
