Staff 1953 - Mr Briggs

School For Scandal

Mr Briggs (highlighted in the above picture of the School Staff in 1953) was completely bald, and was therefore (inevitably) known as Curly. His responsibilities, which he failed to carry out because of a total inability to command discipline and respect, were music and (ironic though it is) Religious Instruction. His most famous dictum when trying to keep order in class was "You're letting your parents down!".

On one particular glorious weekend (and probably in the News of the World - where else) his picture topped an informative article about the fact that he had been caught by his lover's husband giving her a quick one when said husband returned from work unexpectedly. (He was actually apprehended hiding behind the bathroom door, with his trousers in his hand!)

His position at school was thereafter untenable, but he was allowed to enter the building once to collect his private possessions. His arrival was spotted by some sharp-eyed mischief-maker, and his departure was accompanied by a chorus of "You're letting your parents down!" by the assembled senior school. 1954 I think. (
recollections of David Swindlehurst)
